An
early 2-sided NMEA membership information sheet stated that the mission
of the National Marine Education Association was to:
- Promote
a marine literate society.
- Stimulate
communication among all persons with an interest in marine affairs.
- Develop
a comprehensive marine education effort.
There were two levels of annual membership. For $5, the member received
a subscription to Current, the quarterly newsletter. For
$15, the member received Current and a subscription to Seaworld,
the quarterly magazine of marine education.
In
addition to annual memberships, there were also Life Memberships for
$200 and Contributing Memberships for $500 or greater. (Click

This
1980 membership flier stated NMEA goals are:
- To promote a marine
literate society.

free exchange among those forming a community of interest in marine
education.
- To foster the infusion
of marine education throughout the formal and nonformal educational
settings.

of Current: The Journal of Marine Education.
- Periodic mailings
on issues affecting Marine Educators.
- Satisfaction of
being at the center of a network of leaders in marine ecology, maritime
heritage, and nautical recreation....
Active Membership for one year was $8.00; Life Membership: $200; Contributing

When
this 2-sided membership brochure was published, there were 14 regional
chapters. Membership Categories included: Student: $15, Active: $20,
Associate: $35, Sustaining: $100 or more, Life: $300 or more, Patron:
$500 or more, Affiliate: $35, and Corporate: $250 or more.
Membership benefits
included receiving two publications (Current: The Journal of Marine
Education, and the newsletter, NMEA news), and a discount
on national conference registration fees.
The
brochure stated that The National Marine Educators Association brings
together those interested in the study and enjoyment of the world of
water-both fresh and salt, is affiliated with the National Science Teachers
Association, and provides a valuable focus for marine and aquatic studies
all over the world.
Also in the brochure
was a description of NMEA’s annual World of Water Competition
