NMEA Affiliate Chapters

Listed below are the chapters of the National Marine Educators' Association and the year each became affiliated. At the bottom of the list is a copy of the formal application for affiliate membership that was used prior to 1985, when the National Marine Education Association name was changed to the National Marine Educators Association.

 

1979:

  • MAMEA (Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association).Reference: Current: The Journal of Marine Education, Volume 8, No.2, 1988, p.9

 

  • MME (Massachussets Marine Educators). Reference: Letter dated August 30, 1979 from Robert D. Abrams (NMEA President) to Jack Crowley (President of MME).

 

 

1980:

  • NYSMEA (New York State Marine Education Association. Reference: Letter dated March 1, 1980 from Bob Abrams (NMEA President) to Jim Lanier (Chair of the Chapters Committee): Letter states that NYSMEA received full chapter status in May, 1980.

 

  • GOMMEA (Gulf Of Maine Marine Education Association).Reference: Letter dated February 13, 1980 from Bob Abrams (NMEA President) to Deb Hall (President of GOMMA)

 

 

 

  • CMEA (Connecticut Marine Education Association).

In 1984, CMEA and RIME (Rhode Island Marine Educators) were replaced by SENEME (Southeastern New England Marine Educators.) SENEME formed in Wakefield, RI in August 1983. Reference: Find Peterson.

  • NAME ( Northwest Association of Marine Educators)

 

1981:

  • SWMEA (Southwest Marine Education Association) Reference: Board of Directors Meeting Agenda: August 3-4, 1981.

 

 

  • GAME (Georgia Association of Marine Education) Reference: There is no mention of GAME in the 1980 Conference notes, but 1981 Conference materials list GAME as a chapter. The exact date of affiliation is unknown.

 

 

 

  • FMEA (Florida Marine Education Association) Reference: Board of Directors Meeting Agenda: August 3-4, 1981.

1982:

  • CAMEO (Consortium of Aquatic and Marine Educators of Ohio) Reference:Letter dated October 26,1982 from Prentice Stout (NMEA President) to Susan Leach (President of CAMEO).

 

The name CAMEO was changed in 1993 to GLEAMS (Great Lakes Educators of Aquatic and Marine Sciences) to reflect the growth of the chapter to include other states that border the Great Lakes. Reference: Current,The journal of Marine Education, Volume 12, No 2, 1993.

  • RIME (Rhode Island Marine Educators) Reference: Letter written to the Leadership on NMEA on December 1, 1982 by Prentice K. Stout (NMEA President).

In 1984, RIME and the CMEA (Connecticut Marine Education Association) were replaced by SENEME (South Eastern New England Marine Educators.) SENEME formed in Wakefield, RI in August 1983. Reference: Find Peterson.
